Yep, probably hormones like Greg said. That's why I like to calve out on pasture where they gals have plenty of space, but they still do it.

One passing thought I had. If there are certain cows that tend to be worse offenders, could you run a temporary partition fence across the lot with portable panels to keep the instigators off to themselves?

Usually the boss cows tend to pick fights with more timid cows. They might think twice and not pick fights with cows that are as just as aggressive as they are.
