| I never thought I would want a phone connected to the internet, but now I would hate to be without it. I don't use a lot of apps, email, weather, markets, internet searches, use the maps to look up business numbers in places I am not familiar with. Look up phone numbers chasing parts. You will wonder how you did without it.
As for brands, I am no expert, but here is my 2 cents worth. I had an Iphone, but got fed up with AT&T and switched to a Droid X on Verizon. Either will get the job done, Apple is smoother and more integrated, but that also means it is more structured and controlled by Apple. My X has a larger screen which is a big plus for me, no pun intended, it lets me see things better. I also like the idea of syncing through gmail. Iphones can now do it too, but have to go through Microsoft Exchange. Don't know anything about the windows phone, but the further I can stay away from microsoft products the better as far as I am concerned.
I would select the carrier I wanted first and then decide on the phone.
