Subject: Re: Grain cart tire size?

Southern MN
We have a Brent grain cart that holds about 450 bushels with 18.4 - 42's. When we bought it, we put new tires on a tractor and put the used tires on the cart. They held up for several years, but one did get weak enough to blow out while sitting in the yard with a load on it. We thought about changing to a different size, but the tire dealer convinced us that a new set of 18.4 - 42's would work and put them on with about 40 psi in them. Haven't had any problems with them since, but I don't think I would want to put them on any bigger cart. We try to make sure the cart doesn't sit with a full load for too long. One nice thing about them is they don't get stubble damage. Also, the stalks are not driven down from the cart and since we still use a stalk chopper, it chops better.
