I've used Zagg Invisishields in the past (just a tiny invisible plastic layer that form sticks to the phone) and it has worked great too. Only bad thing is that the dust and crap gets under the edges and the corners start to come off before anything else.
I used to have a Blackberry Curve and was constantly cleaning the track ball and getting crap under the keys. I'm a big fan now of touch phones. No keys ... No balls ... no maintenance ... just spend the money on a cover to protect it and throw it in your pocket day after day.
