....found an acorn. After downloading and installing a program to try and read the card I was required to restart the computer. When the computer came back up it was checking drive status and found the PC card slot with the corrupted CF card in it and automatically fixed the error(s) on the card. I can now read the card and all data unloaded successfully! I haven't determined if anything was lost yet but certainly almost all of it is OK. What a deal! Thanks to everyone for the help.

BTW there is a hidden folder on the card now labelled FOUND.000  containing 4 files titled FILE0000.CHK through FILE0003.CHK of type recovered file fragments and a .txt file with this:
