Southeast Colorado
Personally I hate running the really small tips. Anything below the yellow #20 gives me plugging trouble. I don't know what your spacing is but on my sprayer I went from 15" to 30" by capping every other nozzle. That allowed me to move up to a red #40 and I almost never plug. I'm completely satisfied with the performance of my sprayer now for the last 3 years since I made the switch. I spray about 6.5 gallons to the acre at 40 psi @ 12 mph. I'm pretty sure my nozzles would work down to 30 psi and then you would only be using maybe 4.5 gallon per acre. If you dropped down to the #20 yellow it would be less than 3 gallons. Obviously if your spacing is different you would have to do the math. Good luck.
