Subject: Re: Deep band vs broadcast P

Aberdeen MS
the base of feeder roots is about 8" deep. Corn roots branch out then downward up to about a 45 degree angle.

Deep banding as the U of MN does it, they use an Orthman 1tripper strip tiller for their banding research, places the nutrients around the 10" depth.

P is utilized more so in the earlier stages of crop growth, so deep banding in the year of application, in the right soils, in the "right" year, one would expect not to see a response that would be greatly statistically different.

If one goes on the basis of a MAP or DAP product, commonly accepted that around 20% is available at some point in application yr. Putting down maintenance amounts, say 35 units for 150 bu corn, one is supplying around 7 units of P. That small amount will or can be over taken by hundreds of other factors during the growing year.

Just something to think about.

Edited to add:

Put that amount broadcast on top without incorporation and the root contact with the "new" nutrient is almost nil. Roots don't seek out nutrients and move toward it, they take what they run into during the growing process.
