If you are running Internet Explorer, I would recommend keeping it current. I am not sure Microsoft keeps up with the patches to keep the older versions secure.
To find the version, goto Help-->About Internet Explorer.
I would recommend being up to date even if you don't use IE, some of those components are used in other areas. For a better browser, I would look at Firefox.
