If you don't need XP very often, you can probably get away with running your XP apps inside the virtual machine.
If you're thinking of going this way, be aware that running a virtual machine is quite RAM-intensive. Low-end units (i.e. minimal RAM) may not run virtual machines very well. As Lance said, this may be acceptable if you don't need the XP apps often.
