| Are you trying to boot the laptop with the drive plugged in? If so, try booting the laptop first, then after fully up and running, plug in the drive and see if it's recognized. When I had a problem with my external USB drive mentioned in another post, I found somewhere on the internet that unless you make a change to your BIOS, some systems recognize a USB drive as something that can be booted from, and the computer hangs.
Try plugging in the drive after the laptop is fully booted.
