Manual transmission won't pull the hat off your head because first gear isn't a granny gear. Automatic transmission will pull with those gears though helped by the torque converter between the engine and the transmission. My '98 4.6 engine with manual transmission wouldn't pull with 16" tires and 3.08 gears, but it pulls good with 4.10 gears. I expected to gas mileage to suffer but if I keep it down to 70 the gas mileage is the same as it was getting with the factory gears. I pull a 3000 pound camper at 52 and it only costs 1 mpg.
