We bought a Maytag washer from an appliance store and it last exactly 5 years before dying. We then bought a front load Amana from a big box store that has caused us ZERO trouble. The model number matched the model that Consumer Reports rated highly too. I'd like to see someone prove they substitute cheaper versions in the big box stores. I'd say it's nothing but an old wives tale.
