Canon have always been up there with the best for picture quality in video and stills - but often a little pricey.
It appears to be capable of reasonable quality stills as well as video which is not always the case even with HD ones like this.
Your video files will need converting to play on windows media player - not sure which type it creates but could be .mod
There are various free converters out there.
It would be a more pressing problem that even brief HD clips would be very large.
You could upload them to such as youtube without converting and send a link.

You might investigate how much a spare battery costs for this and any alternatives.
It is tricky managing with only one as the temptation is to save power for later and miss things!
Some are controlled by inbuilt chips and outrageously expensive as no pattern version can work them.
