To clean out old SMS messages go to the date line, usually in gray, click the menu button (looks like a group of 7 fish), click on delete prior. You can choose any date and delete everything older than that date. If you have 1 or 2 messages in there you want to keep make sure you save those first. If you 21,000,000+ free space you have plenty of space available.
