Actually its not a chemical, it is an artificially manufactured hormone that mimics the naturally occurring hormone that cows need to produce milk. Increase the hormone level and the level of milk produced will increase. Problem is that cows on bst are like addicts on crack, they need increasing levels of the so called drug to maintain the increased level of milk output.
