Subject: RAW format cameras

Chebanse, IL.....

I know there's a few folks here that shoot digital photos utilizing the RAW format of the cameras. When friend Omar stopped by this summer, he explained his use of the RAW vs jpeg or TIFF. I'm wondering if others also use RAW & why? I'm not arguing, just wonder what I'm missing.

I photo'd a parade on Labor Day w/RAW out of a Sony A300. You have to convert the photos from RAW to jpeg to work w/them in ordinary photo software. The camera software includes a program for the conversion. This same program also includes some crop/adjustment features for the finished photo. I believe I'm correct saying you cannot print from the RAW file format. However, I noticed that when I converted the RAW files to jpeg, I ended up w/the same size files as if I had just saved as jpeg in the camera to begin with.

So, what would be my advantage to continuing to save as RAW out of the camera & onto the computer HD?

Thanks
