Didn’t Francis Childs plant with a cyclo? Massey combine I think was pretty miserable by most accounts. Your Allis tractor is interesting, they had a knack for throwing rods in later years, high dollar repair at that time. I think equipment is one of the factors in staying afloat - take a 4640 vs 1586 similar purchase price, today the 4640 hasn’t lost much if any value vs the ih losing 2/3 of its value.

It’s sad to see a lot of these places die, and the even sadder part is if they would have been maintained they are worth some real money today. Anybody that says big farms are good for anything other than the big farmer are kidding themselves, towns die off, employment drops, quality of life declines. I go over to sioux county and there’s lots of 4-800 acre farms with livestock that support a family, towns are doing good, schools are holding their own.
