60+ yrs ago, schools were allowed to be "more strict" and use common sense. Breaking rules meant punishment. I believe PUBLIC schools, were pushed away from the ability to mold young children like you do at home. Values are not taught or encouraged.
Between Basic Christian beliefs, and conformance kids turned out better.
Nothing takes the place of a home that has these values though.
