I am far from an expert, but I have had the exact same problem your nephew had. I think I have figured out that if it is not painting, smartpath is not leaving a line to follow. I always drop a marker too just in case. Partly because I don’t trust it, and partly because I like having a marker track to follow around unsquare fields. This allows me to take the wheel and smooth some of the irregularities out.

I should add that I am trusting it quite a bit more at the end of the season than I was in the beginning. Almost everyday I stumble on to a new feature I was unaware of. I really like it.
