Subject: I had to sell corn

Cherokee iowa
Cattle got to my hopeful mark of $189 april 2 weeks before close. I’m a stine guy that feeds all different kinds of crosses if prices dictate. Why? Because most beef cattle are fancy and of better genetics thus bringing a premium. I can’t feed 5000 head a year so my profit has to come from other ways then cattle. For instance I decided to start peeling off some fats weighing an average of 1700lbs last couple weeks stiens I bought for $325 a head weaned at 240lbs in the spring of 22. Most babies were bringing $200 a head at the time and I’m to busy for $25 dollars profit. Wish I would of bought twice as many. “Hindsight” Been feeding anywhere from $8.40 corn to $4.30 corn supplemented with silage from 2016 with dry gluten free grass hay and co-product minerals and blocks of salt. I Have played the options game good enough to have the corn on the lower range of the average. So I have been crunching numbers all day all week wondering what I got paid for my corn? Or cattle? It’s a funny world that we live in. I am like garvo end of the day week month or years. It’s all about being in the green and not the red. I could call it whatever I want but cash in the bank pays to play again. I’m a lucky boy that loves to farm and some days you top the market even if your cattle aren’t drug free or no Inplants. About took 190 220lbs stines at $810 a head last week. Didn’t want the hassle right at planting or have a the room. Maybe it would of been worth the hassle. Will be wanting to fill my pens as more fattys leave the farm to sacrifice themselves for the cycle of life. What’s $5 corn nowadays? I crop farm and feed some cattle and the crop farmer is losing. In reality I made $0 feeding cattle but got paid $9.46 a bushel for my corn 160 bushels allotment per head. Only problem is I need to feed more “cheap” calves. To him who conquers let conquer. I Look for cattle to trade higher even though I want a big break lower to buy replacement bawlers. I mean chop up chop down working our way to $215 fats within 8 months. Maybe not but that’s the fun of not knowing. Edit also sold some physical corn to the eplant for $4.35 minus 30 storage 3 weeks ago. Up to 13%2023 sold
