Subject: RE: Spitz Sunflower seeds

Bow Island, Alberta
SPITZ was originally started on the farm of Tom and Emmy Droog in Bow Island, AB. I grew seed for them in 1982, the first year they had production contracts. Since they were starting from scratch, they had to be better than all the competitors. They worked very hard and were the first to offer various flavors of sunflower seeds and well as the first to sell seeds in resealable plastic bags. They probably had over 75% market share in Western Canada. Eventually they sold to Hostess/Frito-Lay/PepsiCo which operated the plant for a number of years and then closed it, moving operations to North Dakota. Their quality has really deteriorated since then and most stores here don't even carry SPITZ brand anymore.
