Subject: Replace hard drive with a SSD ??

Running a 7 year old PC with windows XP. I am worrying about the 40 GB HDD (I only use about half of that ) packing in and taking everything on it to the grave.
I have read a bit about SSD solid state drives, and am wondering if replacing the HDD with a SSD would be a good idea ? That size is pretty cheap right now.

Also to backup everything on the computer, what system is simple and reliable, yet simple enough for a computer nimcompoop like me to use ??
I see some talk of using an external USB HDD as a backup. Is there software to make such a thing work that is simple to set up ?
TIA
