Subject: Dual spacing for rear of tractors

Running 20.8 r 46 bkt on a 250hp MFD tractor. Currently the spacing between inners and duals is 2.5". When they flex with weight on at the bottom they do touch. They tend to fill up with mud and snow in tough conditions that can freeze and become trouble. My question is how wide do these tires need to be apart in experience to prevent buildup up and trapping of dirt in between? I can switch my spacers around and get a solid 4"s between (without "squatting"). Hoping that's enough? Going wider with overall width presents other problems... TIA
