WCIL | What causes a field cultivator not to work well? In our area we have soils ranging from light mellow loam, gumbo, pure sand, hard clay, and bottom ground with dry-ish topsoil and mud 4 inches deep. F.C. with 5 bar harrow works fairly well everywhere here except when it gets crusted with mud underneath, then we have chunks. Often times we open the field a little wet and hit it again after a couple of hours of airing to knock it down. If we wait too long for the first pass, it will dry from the top down creating huge, white topped hard chunks. Upland farmers think we are "mudding", but the soil doesn't dry like good dirt. A disk tool causes slabs in a lot of our soils. Not doubting your experience, just wondering why it doesn't work well? | |
