I dont think that's right ... you dont need outlook for this to work. If you have a smartphone (iphone/blackberry/or similar) I think they can be configured to sync all you're google contacts and calendar entries OTA (over the air) using the internet.
I'm going to do some research to find out though. What is you're phone model and make?
I do know for a fact though, that you can use Mozilla Thunderbird (free) and get around having to buy MS Outlook.
