On a different note, the insurance companies cannot afford these catastrophes. We will all be paying for it. There has been some discussion of some type of state fund for emergencies to act like re-insurance. I wonder what will develop there.
No state or federal funds for the insurance companies are needed. Any company worth its salt spreads its risk out it will not insure more than a limited percentage of properties in any given area there are also things called reinsurers. Lloyd's of London is one of the most famous.
