Mid MO | When I teach them to sit, I always us a hand signal with the verbal command. For a jumping dog, I would ask them once to sit, with the signal. If they didn't, I would just turn my back on them and stand quietly until they stopped. Then try sit again. Usually two or 3 tries is all it takes. They want your attention and that's why they jump. When they do sit, praise them thoroughly and pet alot.
The chewing, I had to pick up everything, every time. She eventually out grew it. She'd even tote off hammers while my back was turned. More about training me than the dog there (:
