Subject: RE: Composting cattle manure

Beresford, SD
I just stockpile it while cleaning pens during summer months. I take the beaters off the 1159 and run it through the 1140. Just make windrows, don't turn it. By fall normally its between 45 and 50% moisture. Running through the beaters when piling really makes nice material 3 months later. Average manure sample over the years is. 7.5-14.9-26.6-6.6-1.25.(N,P,K,S,Z)....first year availability on the N. Rest, total per ton as applied. When selling, I need to accurately apply 10 ton/acre evenly, why I decided to hire it done. Charging $125/acre applied, application will be $6.5/ton. All my land next to feed yard is hot and it's too spendy to haul it distances to my other farms in side dumps. So, selling it to be applied on farms that are less than 1 mile away. Every fed calf.(500-1500)...sh!ts out a $50 bill worth of fertilizer which in some years could be the "profit".
