Subject: RE: Fringe acre discussion.........

South east Saskatchewan
I'm in southern Saskatchewan, straight north of Renville county, ND. Corn is being grown here for grain more and more. The seed companies are putting a lot of effort have seed that will grow anywhere. Farmers do the math and will grow corn if it pencils out. We haven't done it yet because of the extra investment for the planter, header and dryer needed. The neighbour has been rolling on his corn since last week but has had to combine it in the snow lots in recent years. In 2002 we grew our first soybean crop. We were a fringe cropping area for years. Soybean acres in Manitoba and Saskatchewan went from under 50000 acres in 2001 to over 3 million acres in 2017. These acres will continue to expand until we see a real wreck like a very early frost. Like others said every area has their own cost structure that they have to work in. In my area land is trading at $1000 per acre and rent around $40 per acre. I don't need 40 bu beans to make money.
