I suspect you have a mole problem, but here is a link to a site which explains how to identify each varmints dirt piles. They make different looking piles of soil.
Moles are harder to deal with because the eat insects/larvae and do normally eat poison placed in their runs. Mole repellent sold in garden centers main ingredient is castor oil so you could mix up some castor oil and dishwashing detergent and spray that around your yard.
There are several types of mole traps around too, each touted to be the best.
