... 75 dollar hay is barely above the cost of production on rented ground if you actually consider equipment costs and time. Nearly 40 a ton in our view to put a cutting just equipment wise. Much higher if you have a lot of overhead with new equipment. As others have said in the past too many people willing to do it for a loss. I know we can buy nicer hay, cheaper, then we can produce it.


$75 alfalfa is just plain losing your donkey on hay if you're honest with yourself about what it costs to grow and put up. There are some landlords around here, at least as of last spring, that were looking for more in cash rent than $75 hay will gross.
