Make a quick and easy soil pentrometer. Find some 1/4 or 3/8 round stock and make a t out of it. Some looser soils you may have to have a small nut welded on it to add some resistance when pushing in the soil. Try pushing it into the soil and pay attention to the resistance it is giving you. If it pushes some what easy then gets really hard to push and all of the sudden really easy again you have a compaction layer. Do it in several areas in the field. When you are doing this if you have a compaction layer at the same depth, set your ripper just under that depth.
