Oldbones, if you've got that big of an oil spot under the compressor, then I would say it is time to replace the compressor. Oil and freon is mixed. As far as you starting it and moving it, you shouldn't hurt the system as long as the system is off. More than likely it is out of freon and the pressure switches will not allow it to kick on anyway. The system will still have to be flushed with new drier, vacuumed down, etc... before replacing the compressor and this can be done anytime.
