Subject: RE: Growing Flax Seed for Human Consumption

Coaldale, Alberta, Canada

seed fairly shallow, as narrow row spacing as you can. Seedbed doesn't have to be extremely fine, just need to be able to seed 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep reasonably consistently. We were on 8 inch, 6 would be better. Not to much N, if it lodges you will not be happy. Will you be swathing it? We swathed in the past, now guys are dessicating and straight cutting. Has to be dry dry, or it will wrap like nothing else. If the dew comes down and you are cutting and your knife starts hammering, stop, you will not make the end. Have a plan for the straw, some bale and burn, hard to chop evenly. Very few pest issues here, not a very competitive crop as far as weeds go, fairly upright plant so weed control is very important.

If you decide to swath it, make sure you pull a swath roller to tuck in the edges to keep it at home if the wind blows. If you have a good crop, not lodged, you can tie a nice swath and be fairly wind-resistant. If not and it blows in the fence, nobody will be happy.

We are very different climate than you, so best to talk to local guys if you got any.

Seed will run out of any little crack, and you can drown in it if you climb in a bin.

We averaged between 40 to 50 bu/ac on irrigation with an old variety, moderate fertility, and reasonable weed control
