I really think it has to do with your yield limiting factors. In my area NW IA -- we can grow really good crops IF the weather cooperates. Beans the previous year for us tends to hold more water and warm up faster in the spring. This is probably more because they die a 1/2 month sooner, so any extra rain gets credited towards the next season. These are two of our biggest issues, either too dry, too wet, too cold -- usually spring wetness is a function of cold soils -- so COB basically eliminates 2 of the 3 biggest issues we have. Now with good tillage practices we can really help out the COC. Moldboard plows and rippers really help. In our area if you get the system down for spring, your yields will be the same AS LONG AS you have enough moisture in the fall to finish the crop. If its a year where you run outta gas on the back end of the growing season, COC will usually be 10-20 bu behind COB, as long as rain isn't an issue, and disease is controlled, Id expect similar results. Disease has been a huge issue for the last 3 years -- Gosses and NCLB have absolutely smoked some fields.
