The key to successful CoC is managing the residue. We forget that nature doesn't rotate crops in building soils, nature manages the residue. Nature does not bury residue but layers it on top. Most people give up on CoC before the soil flora and fauna really get in gear for continuous corn. I've seen operations that have been in CoC for years where the residue seems to almost disappear. Most operations try to brute force corn residue, see it doesn't work, then go back to beans and tillage. A major problem with CoC in the past is always getting a good corn seedling stand in all that residue from last year's high yielding corn crop. We now have ways of getting a good stand without massive tillage which prevents the flora and fauna that likes its residue on the surface from ever really getting going. I also feel that continuous corn can be good for the soils if done right for a particular location and conditions.
