We've been planting 15" corn for silage for probably 10 years now. We haven't done any side by side comparisons, but we figured we gain 10% yield per acre over 30". This year we planted between 34000-38000 population.
Another benefit we see is weed control. The narrow rows canopy much sooner then 30" helping surpress weeds. In dry years it also holds moisture longer too.
Only downfall is if you want to combine it, you need a different head. We chop every acre, so it isn't a concern.

From what I've seen in NW-WI is the gain you see is an uneven balance of fodder to grain, and in my case not a gain at all. I am not a fan of BMR corn silage, but try to grow the best milk per ton corn silage I can. 9 times out of 10 the top silage is from the top grain hybrids from the area in that given year, chopped at the right moisture.
