Last I read, ISU says there is no correlation between sulfur in soil tests and crop response to sulfur. So the only test is to add sulfur and see if the crop is better.

Your subsoil is probably mostly clay. When I was a kid my dad added gypsum to his yellow clay garden patch and if became a great deal more mellow and productive.

Since prairie top soil is essentially composted prairie plants, working in lots of stover to raise the organic mater may help. I'd go for a few years of alfalfa. I did that on my farm that was very low in organic matter and its still showing benefits 25 years after I started. It had been farmed by tenants for more than 50 years with owners never having farmed.
