Subject: Alternating rows of corn and beans

We just got back from a family trip out west and drove through parts of Nebraska, South Dakota, and southern Minnesota.

In S. MN, I noticed a farm where there was 6 rows of corn, then 6 rows beans repeating across large areas of land. What is the purpose for this?

From the road at 75 mph, the crops in Minnesota and eastern South Dakota look great, the crops in middle South Dakota look ok to fair, and parts of western Nebraska look pretty bad.
