Nevada, Iowa | Generally speaking, if the damage happens a week or more prior to tassel, it will straighten up enough to pollinate fairly well. You may even see normal yields if you have everything in line after the damage date (adequate rain, fertility, etc.). In most cases we've had in the last ten years, the corn will be 30" or more off center making harvest a real pain. Depending on row direction and damaging wind patterns, one way harvesting may be necessary. Any harvesting aid you can add on economically will help lessen the hassle but the bottom line will still be a mess. Two years ago we had some fields nearly flat a week and a half before tassel emergence and the yields were respectable for what we could tell. Pushing harvest ahead with gas drying is advisable. | |
