Lift the reel up and down once or twice.
Sounds like witchcraft, but it works, circuits must be tided together some how.
Yes I did the hotwire thing to the switch, but if you lift the reel up and down a few times or hold the switch up, if I recall. The auger will swing.
My 1640 done that for years, as long as I could get buy I never looked into it any deeper
( only did it once or twice a season
