I usually inspect suspect circuit boards with a jewelers loupe to spot damaged components or bad solders. I always have a few items laying around that quit working that I disassembled and can't find anything wrong with but I have a long list of valuable items that I have repaired and saved myself thousands of dollars. It seems about any circuit board in a new piece of equipment cost about a grand. I have also disassembled items that had a sticker saying something like "no user repairable components inside" and found a blown fuse that was the problem.
