Subject: RE: Corn versus Milo in crop rotation with cotton

north central Kansas
I would think if you can plant milo as early as April you could plant corn much earlier and have it mostly done before the cotton needed the water. I've seen some data on the water requirements of corn and milo but I can't remember where right now. I remember milo produced its first bushel at a much lower water level than corn, although corn increased its bushel/inch of water more quickly after its first bushel. It seemed like you had to be well over a 100 bushel yield before corn became a more efficient user of water. As far as other inputs, I use the same fertilizer and pre-emerge chemicals for both. The main difference is the seed cost. My expectation is that if you can't raise 100-bushel milo, you probably can't raise 100-bushel corn. But if it was me, I also wouldn't hesitate to give it a try on some acres next year. My rainfall average is 26" per year and I raise very similar yielding corn and milo.
