As slow and heavy as what your soils will take. Its all about "NET" moisture. There is going to be some surface evaporation, lets figure .25" for each application. Lets say you are going to need 6" of water in a season. If you are putting only .75" per pass you'll only net .50" per pass, and after 8 passes (6/.75=8) but you'll have evaporation losses of 2", so you'll only net 4". If you put on 1.5" per pass, then you'll need 4 passes, and you'll have evaporation losses of 1" so you'll net 5". If you only put on .5" then you aren't getting much moisture into the soil at all, by the time you lose .25" to surface evaporation you net very little water...barely 1 day's worth.
