denny-o - 11/15/2012 07:41 Hmmm, so the gas engine is the equal of a diesel... So, why aren't there any 300HP + new tractors offered with gas? In fact why aren't there any 150 hp new tractors offered with gas? In fact, Kubota (and the others) does not offer a gas engine in their tractors above 40 hp. Show me a gas semi being made today. If you want a gas pickup, go for it. But don't go around saying it is a better engine than diesel for hauling because factually that is simply wrong. Just go read the performance tests for 3/4 ton pickups in the magazines - do you see any gas engines exceeding the diesels in even one single pull test? Of course not. I'm not brand centric. Currently we have and use Duramax (love em), Cummins (love em), International (lukewarm love), and Mercruiser (believe it or not) diesel engines. Now, for mileage on the road, I love my little Saturn GAS engine. Choose the right engine for the job. denny-o old GM engine guy

I believe the op questioned the longevity and we morphed into color war.  I posted about what my experience has been with each model, and I will stand behind my testimony.  On this farm we have tried everything.  Each of our employees put 15-25000 miles on a pickup in a year.  We have all but eliminated all of the diesels.  We kept three.  One F450 with a 7.3 because the guy who drives it lives 45 miles from the shop and the 19.5 tires last longer.  The others will most likely be gone in the next trade cycle.  Seems like if there is a pickup that needs repaired "here", it is a diesel.  Glow plugs, turbos, transmissions, it just seems to keep me in a mechanic job.  I believe they have there place, I just don't believe it is in our fleet of trucks.  If we had thirteen diesels instead of gassers, I would have to hire many more people just to keep them running.  I will keep my new "sub-standard" 6.2 gas V-8 and never have to worry about it not starting in the morning or gelling up on the highway on the way to work.
