MD | Tried to set up an outdoor IP cam, at a remote farm location, that I could monitor from anywhere including a smart phone. Couldn't get it to work, despite many hours of effort, and tech support from everyone including some upper-level network engineers.
Crux of the problem came down to a concept called 'port forwarding.' I was attempting to have the camera (Foscam model - which worked fine) wirelessly connect to a router (which it did) that was connected to a USB mifi to provide internet connection (and that all worked.) But I could not get the settings right to allow remote viewing without having a computer at the remote location. There is no heat or suitable place for a computer at the remote site, so I have given up, for now, and am using a cell phone trail camera instead.
I would expect someone to solve this technical problem soon and offer an out-of-the-box solution. It may already exist but I haven't found it. | |
