This news article in the West Central Tribune is about a farmer that is downsizing in his farming operation. It tells the story of his father and brother that lost out by the late 80’s. He was able to survive. A paragraph from the story is listed as follows.
“David’s father, Arvel, bought 4,000 acres in the Jamestown area in 1960. In 1962, he made headlines when he was the first in the nation to buy a John Deere 5010 tractor rated at 117 horsepower — the biggest in its day.”
I was at a sales demonstration for dealers west of Mpls. in the fall of 1962. They showed the JD 5010, which was new. This would have been a 1963 model. Below is a picture of the tractor. If I remember right they said the tractor was sold and headed to ND after the demonstration. Here is the link to the story:
