Subject: took some early snaplage (pics)

west central wisconsin

Hi all

So, we planted some 89 day corn on some sandy ground this year.  One farm we chopped corn silage on 2 weeks ago, and yesterday, we took snaplage on the second.

The farm we took for snaplage did get a good dose of liquid manure, so the stalks were still quite green, but when we hand shelled some representative ears, they tested 35%..... which is where we like to harvest at.  Normally that yields us a final product of about 42%.  I've not taken a moisture sample on the finished product yet, but it looks about right.  Yield was excellent and now this  bag full can ferment and will be the first of the new crop we feed out in a couple of months.

Afterwards, we commented that we have never harvested corn in August..... it does seem kinda odd, but in this case it worked well.  We still have to wait on the rest of our corn to do silage now, and it might be a couple of weeks yet.
