Subject: shimming openers on early riser row unit

Finally getting around to going through the planter, mine is a 1200. Boots all wore out on leading blade side. Most rows had two shims behind each blade. Leading blades all measured 13.5" after season. I'm replacing all the blades, boots and points.

Should I shim the blades evenly, or put more behind the leading disc? I understand the blades should just touch, but I'm wondering if they were moved toward the leading edge side if I could get more life out of the boots. Or did the boots just wear quickly because the blades were near the end of their life?

Looking at the points, it's pretty obvious that it rode quite a bit towards the trailing disc side, which makes me think the seed trench is not centered under the row unit. The firming point tips all show in the little plastic gauge, but are worn on the sides to where they are narrower than the boots.

While we're at it, any advice on which blades to get? Looks like I have the options of
new style narrow HD bearing: 3.5mm, 4.5mm, or 5mm
old style HD double row bearing in 3.5 or 4.5mm

Price is within $10 for any of the options, I think. Thinking the thinner blades might flex and touch better, but thicker blades would last longer and extend boot life. Not sure which way to go. If I go to the new style bearings I'll have to get new bolts, but that's not a big deal either.
