With the discussions on retained bull calves below I thought I'd add a couple pics. Checking on heifers and giving my bulls a gentling treat the other day, I snapped a couple pics. Retained bull calf 88 at 11 months is looking better. He will be breeding a group of his half sisters including #33 in July. 88 is a registered pure Hereford. 33 is commercial. My plan is to use 88 for about 60 days then sell him as a breeder at slaughter bull price + a couple hundred dollars in the fall if anyone locally is interested. There seem to be a lot of small commercial herds looking for a decent but economical bull. 88 will be breeding a group of his half sisters. 88 has some butt and good SC. He should have great calving ease considering the CED of his sire and dam. Combinations like 88 and 33 should produce some good, smaller frame size, easy calving, long-term cows.
